The AAA Cavalier Bremworth Unbuilt Architecture Awards in 2011 will celebrate 20 years of supporting architectural excellence.

To mark the occasion Cavalier Bremworth has is introducing a new category and boosting the prize pool by $6000 to a total of $16,000.

This year there are three categories, expanded by the introduction of a new category for the professional entrants.

Competition Categories:

  • Open — Conceptual (Professional)
  • Open — Work-in-progress (Professional)
  • Student
  • Professional entries need to be submitted online for a pre-judging by Tuesday 25 October after which finalists will be asked to provide boards and models for final judging on the 16th November.

Students need to register their interest online and provide their work for judging on 15 November

The work in progress category enables architects to enter projects in an ‘off the board’ state. The professional categories, Open — Conceptual, & Open — Work-in-progress, award the winner $5000 and a Chris Metcalfe trophy and award the runner-up $1000. The student section offers a $3000 first prize and trophy with $1000 for the runner-up.

Judges

The AAA Cavalier Bremworth Unbuilt Architecture Awards have attracted a stellar judging line-up. One acclaimed international judge, balanced with two local judges will ensure a comprehensive and well debated judging process will occur. We are delighted to have Kerry Hill, Andrew Patterson and Nat Cheshire onboard for the 2011 awards.

Kerry Hill, Kerry Hill Architects — Singapore/Perth

Australian-born, Singapore-based, Kerry Hill has been responsible for the design of many significant developments in South-East Asia and the wider Pacific region. His achievements in his 40+ years of practice were recognised by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects honouring him with their Gold Medal in 2006. In 2010, Kerry received the Singapore President’s Design Award for the Designer of the Year.

He lectures and travels extensively, and has taught in several leading Schools of Architecture. He is currently Visiting Professor of Architecture at the University of New South Wales and an adjunct Professor at the University of Western Australia. In 2008, he was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Architecture by the University of Western Australia.

He relocated to Asia in 1971 and since that time projects have been carried out in most areas of South-East Asia including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia as well as regionally in Australia, India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Japan. More recent commissions include projects in Turkey, Croatia, Jordan, Egypt, Spain and China.

Andrew Patterson, Patterson Associates, Auckland & AAA President

In May this year Architect Andrew Patterson’s practice was named by the world’s most searched architectural journal; World Architecture News as one of five firms “whose directional ideas are helping to shape the future of [world] architecture”.

This achievement is unprecedented in New Zealand’s creative community. Patterson Associates are multiple recipients of New Zealand’s highest architectural awards, including the AAA Cavalier Bremworth Unbuilt Architecture Awards , and are the Architects of New Zealand’s only new build 6 star Green rated project- Geyser located in Auckland. Andrew Patterson is the chairman of the Auckland Architectural Association for 2011.

Nat Cheshire

Nat Cheshire is an exciting young architect and designer who moves organically from huge institutional work to the digital fabrication of bespoke door handles and the hand-finishing of reclaimed furniture. He has been working in architecture since the mid-nineties, and ran a boutique practice before joining with Pip to start Cheshire Architects.

Cheshire is a practice formed around the depth of its ideologies, rather than the thinness of styles and project types. It operates across fields of luxury and poverty, newness and age, roughness and refinement. We run parallel programs of research, writing, lecturing, publishing and university teaching as integral parts of this practice.
