The Melbourne arm of an award-winning firm has slashed its workforce by around half, according to Architecture & Design sources.
International architecture firm DesignInc has made up to 31 redundancies, cutting around half the staff at its Melbourne studio employees, the anonymous insider said.
Staff including architects and interior designers were gave two weeks’ notice last Thursday, sparking fears that the worst is not yet over for the design profession.
Among DesignInc’s well-known projects is the $51 million CH2 Melbourne City Council House, which was awarded Australia’s first six star Green Star rating for the design stage by the Green Building Council of Australia.
DesignInc was also responsible for the architecture and urban design of Sydney’s Chatswood interchange, in collaboration with Cox Richardson.
The Melbourne studio would not return Architecture & Design’s calls, emails or messages.
Sandeep Amin, director at DesignInc’s Sydney branch was unable to confirm or deny the redundancies at the Melbourne branch but did confirm that no redundancies were made at the Sydney office, which has hired 10 staff since February.
