The Australian Institute of Architects has released a shortlist of proposals and teams vying for the role of Creative Director of the Australian exhibition at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale.

The Institute recently announced its commitment to the Venice Architecture Biennale for the coming six years - ensuring the nation’s representation at the 2012, 2014, and 2016 events - after successfully representing Australia in Venice since 2006.

In May, the Institute called on Australians with a ‘vision’ and passion for promoting Australian architecture internationally to submit expressions of interest in the 2012 Creative Director role, outlining their exhibition ‘vision’ and details of key team members.

All teams now have four weeks to complete detailed Stage 2 submissions for presentation to the Venice Committee in mid-August, with the Creative Director announced by late September.

The Biennale is regarded as a unique opportunity to showcase Australian architecture and architects globally. Since 2006, the Institute says it has successfully increased international awareness of the highly creative and dynamic nature of the nation’s architectural profession through its presence there.

Most recently, the 2010 NOW and WHEN: Australian Urbanism exhibition attracted a record-breaking 93,000 visitors. The exhibition is currently showing at the Object; The Australian Centre for Craft and Design in Sydney’s Surry Hills as part of an ongoing tour post-Venice.
