Alternative designs for two Sydney stations and increased public space are unveiled as part of the CBD Metro’s Environmental Assessment report.

A new alternative plan for the Pyrmont Metro station saves some of the terraces on Union Street, including the facades and the bulk of the buildings. The plan also extends the size of Union Square and proposes rebuilding a Victorian-style building that was knocked down some years ago.

An altered plan for Rozelle creates a public plaza that will showcase two of the local churches and provide walkways underneath Victoria Road.?

In total, around 33 properties along the CBD metro route would be acquired and demolished by the state government and 175 business tenants would have to be relocated.

The assessment has been welcomed by the property industry for bringing “important modifications” to the station plans, particularly the decision to ensure the creation of a Town Hall Square.

“The planned pedestrian walkways to Wynyard Station and Barangaroo from the new metro station are absolutely vital to the successful delivery of Barangaroo,” NSW executive director Ken Morrison said.

Barangaroo “will live or die” by is connections to the CBD, Morrison said.

“We repeat our calls for a new station — not just a station box — to be delivered at White Bay to facilitate the renewal of the Bays Precinct area,” he said.

“It seems crazy for the government to, on the one hand, begin a planning process for the renewal of White Bay and Glebe Island but then not build a station to support this renewal.”

The Property Council will be making a submission to the Department of Planning on the CBD Metro Environmental Assessment.

“The creation of this blueprint is well overdue, but provides the opportunity for NSW to build to the transport future this city deserves and win federal funding for vital infrastructure projects,” Morrison said.
