An exhibition of Tasmania’s most outstanding new buildings launched in Launceston this week.

Thirty diverse architectural projects entered in the 2011 Tasmanian Architecture Awards are on display - including the luxury Saffire Resort at Coles Bay by Circa Morris-Nunn Walker, which took out the Colin Philp Award for Commercial Architecture and the Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture in June.

In awarding this project, State Architect and Jury Chair, Peter Poulet said: “For the client, both the physical context and the built elements need to be instantly recognisable around the world, and by employing an evocative and strongly gestural roof design, as seen in the aerial view of the skate with the Hazards beyond, the desired image and impact has been achieved.”

Other projects featured in the exhibition range from state of the art educational facilities, such as the Ogilvie High School Student Learning Centre by Liminal Architecture and Tarremah Hall by Morrison & Breytenbach Architects, to existing buildings injected with new life. This includes The Charles Redevelopment by local firm ARTAS Architects, involving the conversion of the formerly derelict Launceston General Hospital into a 99-bed hotel, 14 luxury apartments and commercial offices.

Those interested in residential design will be able to enjoy a range of innovative residential architecture from around the state, including houses at Allens Rivulet, Fern Tree, Marion Bay and Dilston.Allens Rivulet House, by Room 11. Photography: Ben Hosking
