Watpac's 'The Zone' building at Sydney Olympic Park has received a 4.5-Star NABERS Energy base building rating and a 4-Star Green Star - As Built v2 rating from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA).

The $80 million new home to the Commonwealth Bank utilises a number of different green technologies to reduce its environmental impact, including a recycled water system for cooling tower water, non-potable water uses and landscape irrigation. The seven-storey building also has shower and bicycle facilities, waterless urinals, custom indirect pendant lighting and sunshades on each level.

Ninety per cent of the building also has a 400mm-tall access floor system, which contains a multi-zone underfloor air displacement mechanical system, all of the power and tele-data reticulation for the facility, and a secondary sprinkler system.

"As with all Watpac projects, The Zone represents extensive design planning to ensure our clients have an end product that will not only stand the test of time, but also offers long-term savings in terms of energy and water costs," said Watpac managing director, Greg Kempton.

Other Watpac projects that have achieved industry ratings include the 275 George Street high rise project in central Brisbane and the 25 Montpelier Road office building, which was the second project in Australia to receive a Green Star rating upon first application to the GBCA.
