Around 2,500 tonnes of steel roof was lifted to the top of Perth Arena on Friday (May 14).

The complete lift was 23m in height and represents a major step in the construction of WA’s 14,000 seat arena.

"It is a significant engineering achievement as the soccer pitch-sized roof is an uncommonly large lift for Perth," says VenuesWest chairman, Graham Partridge.

Consulting engineers on the roof lift were international company Aurecon, who have provided structural, facade, fire safety, vertical transportation and retractable roof mechanical systems services.

Responding to the technical challenges posed in the design of the unique structure and to develop an efficient structure for the retractable roof, it drew on the company's previous stadium projects such as the new Wembley Stadium, Melbourne Cricket Ground Grandstands and Etihad Stadium in Melbourne.

"In addition, collaboration between all stakeholders, including the structural engineer, architect, and builder has contributed to the success so far in reaching this key milestone on Perth Arena," says Don Phillips, Aurecon Region Leader WA.
