A new seven-level apartment building designed by SJB Architects is among the latest demonstrating the trend for ‘unloved’ structures to be demolished and replaced by design-led developments.

Located in the fashionable Sydney suburb of Potts Point, developers Investec  says 10 Wylde Street will combines art deco architectural elements with traditional craftsmanship and ‘world’s finest materials and finishes’.

Referencing the history of the precinct, a predominantly face brick façade will include elongated roman bricks and gentle curves that mimic the surrounding Wylde Street.

The ‘boutique-size’ development will contain 21 apartments.

Architect Adam Haddow from SJB says it is the best residential address in Potts Point, and the building will become a Sydney icon. “It will not derive its status because it shouts loud; instead it will deliver a refined and timeless architecture,” said Haddow.  “This is a building that articulates a new contemporary living standard for Potts Point; one that is not afraid of its newness but equally confident in its reference to a lineage.”

“From the door handle detailing to the lettering on post boxes this will be a considered building with personality, casual style, a remarkable address and the best harbour views in the world.”

“The fabric of the building is soft and subtle, changing colour in the rain and growing more beautiful over time,” Haddow said.

“Openings in the building are deeply revealed, inhabited by balconies with folded copper detailing and clear glass balustrades which provide views of the sweeping city skyline while ensuring privacy from the street activity below.”

The hardwood parquetry flooring is laid in a herringbone pattern, which is continued with travertine tiles on the balconies.

The developers say elegant timber joinery, plush bedroom carpets and exquisite bathroom tiles are standard, as are modern kitchens with Miele stainless steel gas and electrical appliances, and stone bench tops and splashbacks. Deep skirting boards will be used in a contemporary style.

It continues: ‘Everything about the building is over-specified, including a glazing system from Switzerland that provides near-invisible framing and acoustic excellence.’
