Specifying a coating for architectural metal can be daunting because even the slightest of mistakes in the preparation or application stages can have disastrous time and budget repercussions.

For example, specifying the wrong primer for a steel structure, choosing the wrong topcoat for an aluminium façade panel or painting in imperfect, ambient conditions could see the metal surface flaking, fading or matting within the year and you, as the specifier, burdened with costs of repair.

The material used for the finish can also affect the costs associated with a client colour revision. The application process for some metal coating products means recoating cannot be achieved in situ and that the metal product would have to be disassembled and returned to the factory to accommodate a colour change.

And that’s just for new builds. Matching an existing colour perfectly or patching scratches can also be notoriously difficult for metal and, in fact, impossible to achieve for some metal coating products.

Thankfully, there are products on the market that make specifying a coating for all the metal on and in your building relatively simple.

PERFORMANCE FIRST

Colourthane® from Wattyl’s reputable protective coatings range is an ultra-premium quality, two-component, acrylic polyurethane system that is designed specifically to deliver an outstanding gloss finish that is incredibly enduring.

Wattyl Industrial Coatings, a division of Valspar Paint, have been supplying Colourthane for use on commercial infrastructure, agricultural and heavy machinery, transportation and countless other industrial metal applications for years and are now seeing the product increasingly specified for use in architecture.

This is partly due to Colourthane’s excellent resistance to atmospheric exposure which means it is suited for exterior architecture use. Its improved protection against corrosion, combined with a UV shield, ensures that your exterior metal products remain protected against even the toughest environmental conditions.

THE PERFECT MATCH

The Colourthane C-Series delivers excellent colour reproduction through Wattyl’s intermix tinting system which means Wattyl can tint Colourthane to match virtually any colour including solid colours and metallics.

To date, over 3000 colours are available in the Colourthane range with new colours added regularly.

EASY DOES IT

The Colourthane system offers a variety of hardeners, reducers and primers that allow you to customise the product combination for any job. Colourthane is applied in a simple spray process and can be applied under a wide variety of ambient conditions and working environments which reduces the likelihood of contractor error.
