Vibrant Visions in Design (VIVID) will once again be showcasing new and emerging Australian-based designers at Furnitex, an annual exhibition showcasing a comprehensive range of contemporary furniture and furnishing.

As Australia’s longest running design competition, VIVID provides a platform for new design talents across the country. To date, it has assisted over 400 designers with more than 700 products to kick-start their careers.

There are four categories across all entries – student, concept, commercial and sustainable products – with students from RMIT, Monash University, UTS, Central Institute, Lidcome TAFE, and Levant Studio being shortlisted.

Among this year’s shortlisted submissions under the student category is Polly Popper, a light fabricated from biodegradable, non-toxic polymer, and constructed with the use of standard kitchen utensils. The project was designed by Andre Hnatojko and Dale Hardiman, both current students at RMIT University.

Other shortlisted products are: the Tear Drop Table, designed by Sholto Hayes of Lidcome TAFE, Crinoline Pendant Light by Christelle Chane Tho Wor, a student at Central Institute, and Spindent by Nick Sadowsky of UTS.

Many university graduates are also included in the shortlist. Rapt Pendent Light, a series of decorative lights made from a single piece of solid timber, was submitted by Tate Anson, who graduated with a Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) from RMIT in 2011. The design uses a timber manipulation technique to stretch solid wood, which Anson developed during his final year at University.

RMIT alumnus Dusko Lapcevic’s chair, Shadow, was also shortlisted. The chair is made from custom-perforated mild steel sheets.

Furnitex will be held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre from 18 to 21 July.  For more information or the complete short list, please visit www.furnitex.com.au.
