There were a lot of important events for building designers throughout July, including the Victorian, South Australian, Western Australian, Tasmanian and NSW Architecture Awards, as well as the BDAV Building Design Awards. Architecture news was also incessant throughout the month, with new landmark buildings across our urban centres announced seemingly every day.

Over 60 accolades have been handed out by the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) at the 2015 NSW Architecture Awards held at Sydney’s Town Hall. And while there was strong presence from small architecture firms, 2015 was the year for big firms who prevailed in most of the program’s 12 category prizes.
A concept drawing of a refurbished Sirius apartment building in Sydney, released by Chris Bosse of LAVA, sparked a robust discussion amongst Architecture & Design readers about the place Tao Gofers’ building has in Sydney’s architectural history. Some have called it a “brutalist eyesore” others “a beautiful landmark” but most were in agreement that LAVA’s concept to refurbish the building was off the mark.

Our list of eight houses featuring perforated brick facades was a hit with our readers this month. There is a mix of both commercial and residential projects and each uses the ancient building material in a new and innovative way.
New renders from Elenberg Fraser brought the 68-storey glass tower with “spiralling curves” reminiscent of a Beyonce music video back into the spotlight this month. The $350 million mixed-use building also received attention from international press.
Finally some good salary news for architects. New data on architectural salaries across Australia reflects improved business conditions in 2015, according to the latest survey by the Association of Consulting Architects (ACA).
