Not too far from the festivities in the City and Circular Quay, popular performing arts theatre Seymour Centre has collaborated with Vivid Sydney to bring the lights and sounds to its doorstep.

Leading the project is The University of Sydney Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning.  For a week, a group of Illumination Design postgraduate students will light up the Centre’s iconic 70’s façade in bold and inventive ways, reflecting the transformation of Sydney’s city centre and harbour.

Wendy Davis, researcher in light and colour at The University of Sydney and heading The New Wave: Lights and Technology showcase says: “Vivid is a great opportunity to show what can be done through the use of light.  Using the skills and technologies that have been taught, students from the University of Sydney have experimented with light, colour and reflection to create amazing visual effects.”

The exhibition extends to the foyers of the building, which will feature interactive tabletops and walls developed by the Computer Human Adapted Interaction (CHAI) Research Group at the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies.

The tabletops, which work as giant tablet screens, aim to foster participation between viewers and encourage a hands-on visual experience.  People can explore combinations of images, documents, videos and interactive maps on these giant tabletop screens, and ‘throw’ objects from the table onto the wall.

“This festival of light is not only an opportunity to show off the talents of current students, but also previous students and lecturers who are exhibiting their installations in the Vivid Sydney Light Walk.  It is wonderful to see the University of Sydney's contribution to this celebration of creativity,” Dr Davis said.

The unique light sculptures and installations will be screened nightly outside Seymour Centre.
