The winners of the 2013 Building Designers Australia (BDA) National Design Awards have been announced, with d4 Designs’ Doug Paton taking home the National Award for Excellence for his work on the West Leederville Residence in Western Australia.

Showcasing a functional family home that uses smart, efficient design to capitalise on a relatively small space, the contemporary three-storey development also won the category award for new residential buildings with a floor area from 251sqm to 350sqm.

“The design excellence win by Doug Paton acknowledges a fantastic design that optimises a north-facing site with exceptional views and restrictive easements,” said BDA Western Australia president, Paul Wilson.

“The finished building oozes a high level of sophistication, and a clever structural design takes full advantage of the lake views.”

This is the tenth time a WA designer has clinched the top national prize at the BDA Design Awards.

YURO Building Design won the best commercial building under $2 million category, as well as the best non-residential sustainable building for its Cheese Barrel Café project in Millendon, WA.

Using energy-saving pre-fabricated steel frame, LED lighting and millboard timber decking for the façade of the café, owner of YURO Building Design, Michael Yurisich, also reused wine barrels for tables, and grape picking boxes for the seating.

“I [used] rust-look paint to create an urban vibe while keeping a rustic theme. It only cost $700,000 to design and build so it’s nice to be recognised nationally,” Yurisich told The Advocate.

The BDA’s annual Design Awards aim to highlight the talent and achievements of building designers across the country.
