In terms of his 2024 Sustainability Summit keynote, Symes covered the challenges and benefits to future proofing existing building stock, a theme that is close to his heart.

According to Symes, the founder of Alexander Symes Architect, “pathway to healthy, climate appropriate, low operational energy buildings is a relatively easy path for new construction.”

“The path less travelled by is deep energy retrofit of existing building stock which has many benefits but also many, many, many challenges,” he says.

He also presented some of their successes, failures and learnings associated with upgrading existing building stock.

This of course set the stage for later on in the night, when his practice, Alexander Symes Architects (ASA) picked up the Commercial Architecture - Small with Coconut Crab as well as Single Dwelling -Alteration with the aptly-named Fun Haus.
