John McAslan + Partners has appointed Andrew Shields as a director, bolstering the practice's international transport team as it delivers infrastructure projects around the globe.
Shields will be located in the Sydney studio, bringing his extensive experience in rail to the practice's Australian transport work. He is joined in Sydney by Davie Paterson, who has been appointed to the newly created role of project manager.
Sydney studio lead Troy Uleman said Shields has an exceptional portfolio of complex transport projects and is a timely appointment as the practice starts on new infrastructure and associated projects.
'With our Sydney Metro City projects now complete, we are looking at opportunities aligned with the next stage of Sydney Metro," says Uleman.
"Andrew led the Sydney Metro West Scoping and Definition Design and worked on Barangaroo Station, so his deep knowledge of Sydney Metro will greatly benefit our team."
Shields has over 40 years of experience in the UK and Asia, and has worked on transport and infrastructure in Hong Kong, Japan, China, India and Singapore.
For the past seven years he has worked in Australia on some of the nation's largest metro projects. He said the opportunity to work again as part of a renowned international design practice is what drew him to the role.
"John McAslan + Partners has a long history of great projects. I think the two stations they were involved in on Sydney Metro City are the most clear, purposeful and well-considered pieces of design on the line," says Shields.

"I'm looking forward to joining a design-focused team where I can make an impact, forge strong relationships, and be a mentor to younger staff members."
Shields has extensive experience across all stages of planning, design and delivery on large-scale projects, and confidently manages the complex interface between clients, consultants and stakeholders. He has a strong interest in the urban integration of multi-modal transport and worked on Sydney's Central Precinct Renewal Project.
Shields most recently led the architectural design on all the stations on the Melbourne’s Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) from concept through to reference designs. Other notable projects include station planning and design of the Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) SRL East interchange stations and future proofing of the Airport Rail interchange, and in Singapore, the Singapore High-Speed Rail Terminus tender design.
Davie Paterson joins the practice from the Deloitte's Responsible Business division.
"Davie is an experienced project manager whose skills will make a great contribution to the studio, taking control of day-to-day operations so that Andrew and I can focus our energy on our clients and growing the business," says Uleman.
"With so much major transport infrastructure in development around the nation, we're building our capacity to service existing and new clients who value our international expertise and local knowledge."
