The Sue Carr Award, deriving its name from the esteemed practice’s Founder, is awarded to third-year RMIT students at the RMIT INDEX Exhibition every November. The 2023 recipient has been announced as Rouyi ShaoTian, a third-year Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) student at the university.

Awarded to those who study the Interior Design (Honours) program, the award comes with a $5,000 cash prize to support the winner’s final year students, along with work experience at Carr’s Melbourne studio.

ShaoTian’s submission, titled The Turning Circle project, Creative Marketplace (pictured below), was commended by the Jury for its technical and conceptual prowess.

“Rouyi showcased an enthusiastic and well-rounded repertoire of design, beyond just her chosen discipline,” the statement reads.

“With an adept ability to convey a proposal, Rouyi’s maturity and sincere passion for design – technical and conceptual – is evident through her portfolio and articulation of thought.

“An active participant in student life, Rouyi is a committed young designer with a curious and tenacious approach to her studies. It is this rigour that Carr values and promotes.”

Carr says it wishes to thank RMIT and the participants of the program.
