Studio Nine Architects has announced that after 25 years, Founding Partner John Gallucio will hand the reins to new Managing Director Andrew Steele.

The announcement was made at the practice’s 25th Anniversary celebrations last month. Gallucio is Studio Nine’s last remaining Founder, with David Ey and Andrew Vorrasi retiring in the years previous.

Gallucio says that succession has been a major point of focus for Studio Nine’s executives and says he is excited for the practice’s next phase, in which he will become a Director.

“It’s time to let the young guns drive the future of our business”, he says.

“Andrew has demonstrated the commitment, innovation, drive and passion required to fulfil the role.”

Steele first joined Studio Nine in 2015 as an Associate Director and was subsequently promoted to Director within 12 months. His role as Managing Director will see him work with clients and studio partners, which includes  The Calyx Project with social enterprise Forage Built, and product development including NINELINE and Assembly Three.

Steele was recently involved on the Property Council of Australia’s South Australian Residential Infill Development Committee and this Chaired the Jury for the SA Architecture Awards Houses New and Multi-Residential category. He says he is thankful for the trust his business partners have placed in him and is optimistic about the practice’s next 25 years.

“As we look back on our journey, we can be proud of the positive impact we have made on the places we have touched,” he says.

“Looking ahead our focus will be on harnessing the power of emerging technology and innovation to drive transformative, sustainable change. Whether it’s artificial intelligence or quantum computing, we will continue to push boundaries, continue to learn and continue to challenge the norm.”

“All of these traits are already embedded in our values and will be our guiding light as we move forward.”

“I’m thrilled to embark on this path with our team, clients, consultants and collaborators, and I can’t wait to help be a part of creating a better future together.”
