Acclaimed Australian architect Koichi Takada has been named on Airbnb’s judging panel for the OMG! Fund competition, where 100 winners from around the globe are handed a share in $10m USD to create some of the world’s most outlandish temporary stays.

Takada joins interior designer Iris Apfel, Superhost Kristie Wolfe and Airbnb’s Experiential Creative Product Vice-President Bruce Vaughn on the panel. Entrants are asked to initially describe an idea and if successful, will then share their vision to the panel in more detail in the form of blueprints, plans and videos.

The criteria listed by Airbnb indicates the judges are looking for unique, extraordinary, feasible, sustainable and immersive experiences. Takada says the competition comes at an opportune time where travellers are beginning to spread their wings once again.

"I believe very strongly in the power of travel to enrich us as people. The more that we can immerse ourselves in different experiences, the better off we are,” he says.

"In a time where the restrictions of a global pandemic are lifting, travellers seek out new and immersive experiences. We don’t want to stay in generic accommodation, we want to feel again, connect again and be inspired and revived.

"Regenerative architecture is at the heart of my practice, Koichi Takada Architects. My team and I seek to restore a sense of wellbeing and connection to nature through our projects, and I am looking forward to seeing these types of ideas brought forward in Airbnb’s OMG! Fund.

"Existing and aspiring designers, architects, and creatives from around the globe are invited to dream up extraordinary spaces. The potential of this global programme is very exciting."

If successful, entrants will be granted $100,000 each to bring their designs to life. Entries close 22 July 2022, with winners announced in spring.
