Stuart Tanner has officially commenced his role as National President of the Australian Institute of Architects this week, becoming the first Tasmanian-based National President this century.
Tanner was confirmed as the new National President yesterday, which additionally endorsed the ACT’s Jane Cassidy as 2023/2024 National President-Elect. Tanner says he aims to promote the architectural profession on a national scale during his tenure.
“My key objective as an architect and ambassador for our Institute is to encourage a strong literacy around the importance of design excellence and great architecture, and the role we play in sustainability and social wellbeing,” he says.
“Everyone benefits from great architecture.”
Tanner will assist the Institute in achieving its goal of being Australia’s definitive voice for built environment professionals.
“The architecture profession is responsible for leading on issues of climate change and responsible design in our built environment.
“We are also committed to embracing First Nations cultural awareness and design for Country.
“The most potent way we can convey these messages is through the quality and rigour of our work. Architecture is a potent way to lift society, generate civic pride and emotional enrichment.”
Tanner founded Tanner Architects in Hobart 23 years ago, holding a strong connection to the Australian landscape and its relationship to Architecture. He takes over from former National President Shannon Battison, who will remain on the Board as Immediate Past President. Tanner is full of praise for Battisson as she moves away from the National Presidency.
“Shannon’s unwavering commitment to the mission and vision of the Institute has been remarkable,” he says.
“She has demonstrated leadership and passion, which have played a significant role in shaping the direction and success of the Institute.”
