Sydney University’s School of Architecture, Design and Planning has announced its inaugural Rothwell Residents for 2022 in Architecture and Urban Design.

For a tenure of one year, two professionals in architecture and urban design explore and reflect on their practice through a program of research. Postgraduate students are able to learn directly from the practitioners and gain a deeper insight into the professional nature of the built environment.

Michael Zanardo has been selected as the Rothwell Resident in Architecture for 2022. A registered architect, urban designer and the Director of Studio Zanardo, the practitioner is an expert in the design of social and affordable housing. Zanardo aims to further his PhD research during his time as Rothwell Resident, exploring Sydney’s built history of affordable housing that may inform the design and amenity of new denser forms of housing today.

The Rothwell Resident in Urban Design for 2022 is Callantha Brigham. With over two decades’ experience working in State and Local Governments, Brigham is an architect and urban design luminary. Currently the NSW Vice President and a NSW Chapter Councillor of the Australian Institute of Architects, the architect’s time as a Rothwell Resident will consider principles of equity, diversity and democracy (Susan Fainstein’s concept of the ‘Just City’) and the role designers can play as advocates and agents of change.

The Rothwell Residency program is made possible by alumni Garry and Susan Rothwell, and considers principles of equity, diversity and democracy (Susan Fainstein’s concept of the ‘Just City’) and the role designers can play as advocates and agents of change.

The program aims to support innovation in the areas of architectural design, urban design and urbanism, and heighten research capabilities to create built environments which improve people's quality of life.
