Harmer Architecture in collaboration with Monash University’s Property and Services department has completely remodelled the second level of Building H at the institution’s Caulfield Campus. Level 2 is now a cutting-edge learning and teaching environment, designed to set a new standard for central teaching spaces at Monash.
The project, initially led by former Pro Vice Chancellor Kris Ryan, focused on creating a unique and bespoke interior. As opposed to rigid classrooms, a fluid floorplate pivots with the teaching styles of each tutor. Group study spaces are scattered throughout, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Harmer’s work additionally prioritises the informal, making diverse areas available for students to work independently, meet in groups for projects, or simply socialise between classes. This focus on informality reflects a shift in educational philosophy, recognizing the value of casual interaction and idea-sharing in the learning process.
High-quality acoustics and AV facilities allow for "learning on show”, paving the way for visible and audible experiences for those passing by, fostering a sense of community and engagement. The interior design captures vignettes of the central campus green, creating a pleasant learning environment, while serving as an invitation to students to explore and discover.
Finally, Building H Level 2 incorporates a dedicated industry engagement space. This space facilitates valuable connections between students and the corporate sector, enhancing learning opportunities by providing exposure to real-world applications of their studies and potential future employers.
