From the architect:
Britt White Studio transforms an original 1980s apartment into a serene, functional mountain retreat.
Perched in the heart of Mt Hotham village, a Lawlers Apartment has undergone a dramatic transformation, turning an untouched 1980s property into a cosy and sophisticated alpine haven.
Britt White Studio’s Scandinavian and mid-century-inspired redesign has reimagined the apartment to create a warm, unpretentious retreat that balances functionality with the client’s vision for a peaceful post-ski sanctuary.
The clients, a busy couple seeking a holiday refuge after long days spent skiing, hiking or working, wanted a space that felt earthy, organic and relaxing while addressing the apartment’s outdated layout and aesthetic.
With Britt Howard, Creative Director, leading the design and overseeing construction from start to finish, this mountain retreat was designed to offer comfort, practicality and style - ensuring every detail was optimised for relaxation and long-term durability.
One of the most significant aspects of the renovation was the complete overhaul and modernisation of the kitchen. The original space was optimised for better flow and functionality, with the layout reconfigured to open up and seamlessly join the kitchen and dining room, enhancing both daily living and entertaining potential. A custom bench seat extends from the kitchen joinery across the dining zone wall, adding extra seating while creating the illusion of a much larger kitchen.
The kitchen also received energy-efficient upgrades, including the removal of gas and the installation of induction cooking and high-performance appliances.
Clever design of a previously poor use of space allowed for the inclusion of a Euro-style laundry and appliance pantry, maximising functionality without sacrificing design.
Both bathrooms were entirely reconfigured, with a focus on clever plumbing solutions to transform the spaces. In the main bathroom, all plumbing was relocated to accommodate the flipped design for improved functionality.
A wall was removed, bringing the separate powder room into the bathroom, doubling its size to allow for a better flow with a luxurious and secluded shower closet. The ensuite benefited from the addition of a much-needed toilet and more storage with the inclusion of a mirrored shaving cabinet. These changes not only improved the usability of the bathrooms but also added to the overall luxury and convenience of the apartment.
The lounge room, overlooking stunning alpine vistas, was redesigned with both relaxation and functionality in mind. A custom daybed under the window offers the perfect spot to watch storms roll in over the Great Dividing Range, complete with built-in storage beneath for the added practicality of locking the skis away.
The furniture was meticulously curated, including a wrap-around couch that hugs the wall, creating the illusion of more space while offering ample seating when friends visit. The Nicole Lawrence coffee table was a perfect match for the Laminex kitchen cabinetry, ensuring a cohesive design aesthetic throughout the apartment.
Given the harsh alpine environment, durability was a top priority. The entryway was re-clad with hard-wearing and durable Comcork flooring designed to withstand the impact of snow gear, while a custom-built seating area provides comfort for putting on ski boots.
A recessed drying cupboard with ventilation ensures clothes and equipment are ready for the next adventure, while a sculptural ski vice adds a functional and stylish element to the space.
Throughout the apartment, a mix of hardwood spotted gum flooring, carpet and modern cork was laid to complement the earthy tones of the furnishings. Britt White Studio’s project management ensured that every detail was meticulously executed, even with the clients located over 500km away.
