The renovation of a modest brick veneer cottage in Sydney has resulted in a modern beach house using natural materials and considered volumetric arrangement.
Designed by Buck & Simple, Casa Crisp in the suburb of Mona Vale saw the addition of a rectilinear timber form that sits atop the original podium. This allowed much of the existing dwelling to be retained.
Blackbutt timber was extensively utilised in the home’s design. The locally-sourced Australian hardwood was used for the dwelling’s carport, entry screening and the cladding of the first-floor addition.
Creating a ‘timber on white’ aesthetic, the lower floor has retained the existing brickwork finished in naturally heat reflective white paint.
This material and colour theme continues throughout the interiors of Casa Crisp. Concrete, tiled or oak floors and timber details are accentuated by white walls creating a clean and robust space.
Beyond the material choices is an incorporation of passive environmental systems. Upstairs, rooms utilise cross ventilation and high-level operability to create a stack, or chimney effect, drawing cool air through the home in summer. Additionally, external adjustable louvres and awnings are positioned over large areas of glazing, catering for changing weather conditions.
Originally a 1.5-bedroom home, the new design has added an extra two bedrooms and bathrooms.
