Auckland’s RTA Studio has created an A-frame cabin, Dune Dormer, which encapsulates the form of a traditional Maori hut, which is elevated by the knowhow of contemporary architecture.
Located on NZ’s Great Barrier Island, the hut has been created consciously of its surroundings. Despite its compact form, the dwelling is a three-bedroom home, designed for a family.
The brief provided to RTA called for a sustainable, simplistic design characterised by environment and tradition. Sitting on a concrete base, the palette of timber, glass and lightly-coloured siding makes for an earthy, assured feel. Outdoor areas and glazing allow for views of the ocean, with slight openings in the blinds allowing for the dwelling to be illuminated, setting it apart from the landscape.
Bedrooms are located upstairs, with the entertaining zones located downstairs and designed to be versatile and welcoming. The home, completely off-grid, is powered by solar panels that scale up either side of the roof.
