Tuscany in the foothills of Melbourne: The Harkaway Residence, designed by Studio del Castillo, is a contemporary architectural marvel nestled in the lush landscapes of Victoria, Australia.

The project exemplifies a harmonious blend of modern design and the surrounding natural environment, creating a serene yet functional living space.

“Designed by architect Louis Chiodo about 10 years ago, this house was built by another family. Our client snapped it up in 2019. Our client engaged us to deliver an entirely new scheme that included swathes of custom furniture to make the most of the generous floor plan and soaring ceilings,” says the team.

“To fill the height we sourced dramatic decorative lighting which graces the entrance foyer. This 4 bedroom home has become an entertaining magnet for hosting family events. Wedded to the gardens, there’s a resort-like feel complete with a tennis court, professional poker table, basketball court and gym. With the pool deck and cabana, there’s no need to go on vacation. It’s all right here.

“The timely project coincided with our Creative Director and founder Penny del Castillo’s seasonal visit to the trade show in Paris where she was exposed to suppliers and artisans from around the world. We made changes with beautiful furniture and decoration while still retaining its original features and keeping its soul intact.”

The residence features a minimalist design ethos, characterised by clean lines, open-plan interiors, and a careful use of natural materials such as timber and stone. Expansive glass panels dominate the structure, allowing for an abundance of natural light while framing breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

Studio del Castillo prioritised sustainability in the project, incorporating passive design principles to optimise thermal performance. Features such as strategically placed windows for cross-ventilation, thermal mass in the flooring, and energy-efficient systems reflect the architects’ commitment to eco-conscious living.

The interior design complements the architectural vision, showcasing a palette of earthy tones and textures that resonate with the natural setting. The layout fosters a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, with sliding doors leading to shaded terraces and landscaped gardens.

The Harkaway Residence stands as a testament to Studio del Castillo’s ability to merge aesthetic appeal with environmental sensitivity, offering a tranquil retreat that celebrates both modernity and nature.
