Set within a rural landscape, Billy Maynard Architects’ House at Flat Rock looks to frame its views of a national park while being mindful of the dangers of extreme conditions.
Accessed via a meadow courtyard, the dwelling’s palette is directly influenced by its setting, with brick, concrete, hardwood and steel utilised for external materials. The sharp, futuristic tonality of the steel roofing contrasts against the brown brick facade while still maintaining a robust feel.
The house is configured in an L-shape, with private rooms facing outward to the meadow at the front of the site. The living room is accessed from the bedrooms through an external walkway, that furthers interaction between occupant and outdoors.
Operable shutters control levels of ventilation and privacy as well as connection to the landscape. By day, the home melds with the bushland, concealing itself through its colour scheme. Daybeds and a spacious layout makes for a laid back, sociable living space sat in front of the rural backdrop.
