Refreshing an existing federation cottage, Hobbs Jamieson Architecture have titled this Manly project Modest Start Bold Finish, which seems an apt description given the final product.
The single level foundation cottage was previously tired and in dire need of refurbishment. The practice was approached to revive and extend the dwelling, while being mindful of the existing character of the home.
Rear lane access and long elevation to the north are benefits of the site. A nearby cafe brings noise and patrons throughout the day, with Hobbs Jamieson countered this through the configuration of the extension, with intrusions in the ceiling made to maximise natural light without compromising on soundproofing.
The front facade has been revitalised, maintaining the original detailing. A detached contemporary carport contrasts the facade. The lower level rooms have been retained and restored, with the contemporary extension featuring a contemporary palette of timber and stone that extends out to the outdoor areas.
