Creating a forever home within the bounds of a former general store, Eliza Blair Architecture looks to maintain and showcase the quirks and heritage of South Melbourne Terrace.
The brief provided requested that the existing fabric be kept, with an increase of light and connection to the outdoors to be made. A monolithic gum tree in the backyard formed much of the design brief, with the plantation to be celebrated through openings and even a balcony bathtub.
A screen on the first floor doubles as a privacy measure from neighbouring properties while giving the occupants the ability to adjust the amount of light within the interior.
A steel stairwell and exposed brick walls and brick fireplaces tell the stories of the dwelling’s chequered past. The floorplate sees typically grouped spaces sectioned, mainly due to the narrow site and retail-esque layout of the general store.
