The transformation of Victoria House, overseen by Design by AD, transcends an extension. It's a thoughtful dialogue between heritage and contemporary living. The narrow site presents a challenge, but instead of limitations, its architects see possibilities.
The existing Spanish villa facade remains untouched, preserving its character. New openings, however, peek out towards the north, framing the verdant landscape and drawing in natural light. Arched windows echo the villa's past, while the addition's dark masonry anchors the structure.
Inside, the focus shifts to flexibility and connection. The ground floor, previously compartmentalised, opens up. A dramatic kitchen island becomes the heart of the home, radiating functionality and fostering family gatherings. Upstairs, the kids' retreat spills out onto a balcony via expansive bifold doors, blurring the lines between interior and exterior.
Sustainability whispers throughout the design. Large eaves shade the summer sun, while low-e glass minimises heat gain. The existing pool whispers cool air through the living area, a natural climate control system. Butterfly roofs maximise solar panel placement, capturing renewable energy.
But Victoria House isn't just about practicality. It's a playful blend of old and new. Curved details dance throughout, echoing the villa's arches. Deep window seats invite a moment of quiet contemplation, drawing the eye towards the pool's sparkling surface.
The exterior echoes this playfulness. Shrouds playfully reference the villa's porch arches, while the addition's pitch roof mirrors the existing form. Inside, custom mirrors in the bathrooms playfully transport the arches back into the older parts of the house, weaving past and present together.
Victoria House’s whispers of heritage while embracing contemporary living. It celebrates light and connection, creating a space that is both functional and delightful. It's a testament to the power of thoughtful design, where every element, from the smallest window to the broadest eave, sings in harmony, creating a home that is both beautiful and alive.
