Holding vignettes of 7 Mile Beach and Cullunghutti Mountain, Kibbin Design Studio’s White and Timber House responds to its site’s orientation and angle through a segmented floorplan organised around an internal courtyard.
Featuring a wave-esque roofline, the facade incorporates sustainably-sourced timber cladding, brick and concrete, with the timber softening the exterior. The palette allows for a constant conversation between light and shadow throughout the day.
Kibbin Design were tasked with balancing solar orientation with waterfront views and offshore winds. The courtyard’s glazing to the north draws light into the rear of the home, with the external space providing a sheltered area to be used at all times, irrespective of inclement weather.
The dwelling’s layout is configured for solar performance, with the courtyard providing passive heating in winter and cooling in summer. Double glazing, solar hot water and a 5kW solar array provide the home with water and electricity. The interior’s tonal palette mirrors that of the facade, with timber batten details sat amongst the central void area and open riser stair detailing.
