Several Alspec window and door framing components were employed by the fabricator to achieve the distinctive barrel shape of Teakle Winery’s new cellar door in Port Lincoln, SA. The barrel shape of the Teakle Cellar captures the essence of wine-making with its distinctive curved timber and steelwork.

Located near Port Lincoln on the Lower Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, the Teakle Cellar was constructed during Covid-19 downtime to complement the winery’s existing fine dining restaurant onsite. The project’s builder, architect and fabricator worked together on the challenge of creating the recognisable barrel shape by shaping structural steel and timberwork and adding customised aluminium window and door framing.

The project saw builder Kym Clarke Constructions win the Building Excellence Award (Commercial/Industrial $2-$5 million categories) in the recent Master Builders South Australia annual awards. The judges noted the quality of the workmanship was “exceptional”, and praised the attention to detail in creating the curved window frames, vaulted ceiling and fascia.

Meanwhile in the Australian Glass and Window Association 2021 Design Awards, the development was Highly Commended for the Best Use of Windows & Doors, Glass & Glazing (Commercial $100,000-$750,000), acknowledging the impressive work of local fabricator Nu-View Aluminium Windows, Doors and Glass.

Nu-View used Alspec window and door framing components for elements of the build including McArthur Evo 101.6mm centre pocket framing, Swan Evo 45mm commercial doors and View-Max commercial sliding windows. All three products complemented the customised curved façade and worked together to help complete the unique space.

Both the McArthur Evo and Swan Evo ranges feature centre pocket glazing, where the glass is held within a 3-sided pocket, making it easy to fabricate and install as well as providing security benefits. Meanwhile, the View-Max commercial sliding windows provide a high-performance solution with exceptional thermal, acoustic and weather protection properties. Designed for the commercial environment, the flexible window system is also popular with architects for residential builds.
