For the first time, architects based in and around Newcastle will have the opportunity to compete for architecture awards at a local level thanks to the recent introduction of the Australian Institute of Architects Newcastle Division Architecture Awards.
The new locally based awards will recognise new and innovative designs from the region, which extends north to Forster, south to the Central Coast and west to Singleton and Muswellbrook.
Glen Spicer, Newcastle Division Chair and Director of architectural practice EJE, said, “Newcastle architects have a lot to be proud of and these awards are a chance to show off the region’s most inspirational new architecture. Winners at local level are automatically eligible for the NSW Architecture Awards.”
Nominations for the Newcastle Division Architecture Awards are now open across four categories:
- single housing
- multiple housing
- commercial architecture; and
- small projects
Projects must be located within the Newcastle region to be eligible for entry to the competition.
Members of the public will also have the chance to view award nominations online or at the Australian Institute of Architects office on King Street after nominations close on 3 June 2011.
Winners of the Newcastle Division Architecture Awards will be announced at a Gala Awards Dinner at Noah’s at the Beach on Friday 29 July.
