COLORBOND steel and ZINCALUME steel from BlueScope Steel were extensively used to build the new $10 million state-of-the-art WA Rugby Centre located in Mt Claremont.
Part of the sports facility development, which also includes the WA Athletics Stadium and WA Basketball Centre, the new WA Rugby Centre houses the Rugby WA training teams and the Western Force rugby club.
While COLORBOND metallic steel was used for the cladding, ZINCALUME steel was used for the roof.
According to David Karotin, Managing Director of Sandover Pinder Architects, the WA Rugby Centre needed to be designed as a smaller building that sat comfortably next to the much larger WA Basketball Centre. The design incorporates a ‘blade’ element with bold and uncomplicated features to match the scale and profile of the adjacent buildings.
The Centre was required to house over 70 administrative and sports staff, and incorporate space for the high performance training facilities required by the club. Key features of the WA Rugby Centre include a theatrette, hydrotherapy facilities, strength and conditioning areas, library and video room.
Acoustics was also an important consideration as office space would overlook the training space.
The WA Rugby Centre incorporates COLORBOND steel cladding in the colour Facade throughout the building. COLORBOND steel was the ideal material choice with its corrosion resistant ZINCALUME steel base and baked-on paint finish that resists chipping, peeling and cracking.
ZINCALUME steel roofing in the LYSAGHT TRIMDEK profile was chosen for the building as it created a striking aesthetic for the exterior to complement the surrounding environment.
Similar to the adjacent WA Athletics Stadium and WA Basketball Centre, WA Rugby Centre has a low impact on the environment, incorporating photovoltaic cells for power generation, solar passive design and low energy lighting.
