The North Queensland Household Resilience Program has received another boost with the 2022 State Budget delivering a further $20 million for the third year running.
In an announcement made by the Palaszczuk Government last month, the funding will support low-income Queenslanders living in cyclone-prone coastal areas to make their homes stronger and safer.
Under the Household Resilience Program, the Palaszczuk Government co-funds up to $15,000 worth of work with the homeowner, covering 75 per cent of the cost.
Eligible homeowners will be able to install products that have been approved for use in Cyclone regions C and D, including Crimsafe doors, windows and Safe-S-Capes, all which meet the 36 m/s requirement.
Crimsafe’s Tensile-Tuff mesh and exclusive Screw-Clamp technology offer superior strength that protects against storm-driven debris from wind gusts up to 392kph. The unique ‘build-out’ installation, specifically designed for cyclone-prone regions, is the most effective way to protect the doors and windows of your home or business, which are often the most vulnerable to damage during extreme weather conditions.
The program was established to assist those whose homes were built prior to 1984 and enables owners to strengthen and protect their homes from the damage caused by cyclones in the North Queensland regions from Bundaberg to the Queensland/Northern Territory border.
Minister for Public Works Mick de Brenni said, “In the face of Mother Nature, we know Queensland homes – just like Queenslanders – must stand resilient.”
“Since its introduction in 2018, the Household Resilience program has supported 3,525 low-income households to replace roofs and doors, reinforce windows and tie-down external structures,” he continued.
Minister de Brenni said the program’s second phase achieved an average insurance saving of nine per cent for Queenslanders.
“More than a safe home, this program delivers real cost-of-living relief through insurance savings,” the Minister said.
“Now, at a time when every dollar counts, the Palaszczuk Government will do all we can to support Queenslanders with programs like Household Resilience.”
Owners of pre-1984 homes within cyclone-affected regions are encouraged to check their eligibility for the Household Resilience Program and to invest now in the long-term resilience of their homes and communities by taking advantage of the grants available.
