Architecton co-founder and director Nick Lukas combined bold architecture with uncomplicated materials and elegant interior fittings in his forever home in the inner Melbourne suburb of Moonee Ponds.
Seamlessly enveloping all creature comforts a family of four might need, the Moonee Ponds residence bears Lukas’ signature design style, which is reflected in the materiality of the project, the rigorous commitment to the design intent, and the intentional dialogue between the interiors and exteriors. The house balances straight lines, simple forms and raw materials such as concrete, steel and glass with refined and elaborate interiors.
This is expressed well in the master suite bathroom where the organic rawness is masterfully juxtaposed with the elegant refinement of the house’s design, while the materiality of the project comes to life through a variety of visual and tactile textures.
Dark, iridescent and character-rich porcelain tiles have been used in the children’s bathrooms while the master ensuite features the cool, grey tones and soft brown markings of Elba stone. The natural stone has been incorporated in three different textures along the floor, the walls and the double vanity, with the varying textures providing visual continuity. The stone also provides an exquisite background to the simple and elegant white matt bathware and brushed chrome tapware. Split face tiles on the back wall add depth and texture in a dramatic play of shade and natural light coming off the window to the side.
A frameless glass shower screen separates the shower and bath area from the vanity without obstructing the visual flow of the design. It enhances the sense of cohesion and enables the space to capitalise on the available natural light, while its sleek form and subtle presence further compound the materiality of the space.
The products were carefully selected both for their natural appeal as well as for their lasting qualities that certainly match the intent of this forever home. Raw, organic and natural materials paired with detailed sophistication result in a striking, timeless design outcome, which is exemplified by the master suite bathroom.
