Two products from Fielders Steel Roofing were specified for the prestigious $200 million South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) building in Adelaide’s CBD.
Described as a game-changer for architecture in South Australia, the SAHMRI building was designed by architectural firm Woods Bagot as the state’s leading medical research facility to house up to 700 researchers.
Fielders was contracted to supply 3,000m² of KingFlor KF57 structural formwork, and 3,000m² of KingKlip 700 steel roofing for the new development.
KingFlor KF57 was selected for the SAHMRI building due to its longer spanning capability and lower preparatory costs. The formwork’s reduced need for temporary props allowed fast-track construction, assisting the builders with on-time completion.
KingKlip 700 was chosen for its flexibility to accommodate the curved design on top of the building’s roof, which was a key design feature of the complex.
KingFlor KF57 was installed in the SAHMRI building throughout the floor-by-floor construction of the complex. KingKlip 700 was installed towards the completion of the project in late 2013.
KingKlip 700 was rolled on site using the Fielders Mobile Mill, which allowed for sheet lengths with a span of up to 30 metres. This onsite capability eliminated the need for the material to be transported by truck, allowing for greater lengths to be achieved for the roofing and assisting the builders with faster installation.
The formwork was handled by System Formwork while S&LJ Roofing served as the roofer for the project.
KingFlor KF57 steel formwork
A revolutionary steel formwork solution ideal for complete concrete slabs and steel framed construction over lengthy spans, Fielders KingFlor offers a highly cost-effective solution, given its longer span and deeper profile compared with existing formwork systems on the market. KingFlor KF57 is widely used in standard purlin construction, single skin roof applications, vertical walls, conical tapered roof profiles, structural deck and cassette type roof applications, re-roof framing and plywood substrate roofing situations.
KingKlip 700 steel roofing
Amongst the widest concealed-fix deckings available on the market, Fielders KingKlip 700 is recommended for a broad range of commercial applications including flat and curved roofs. An unbeatable size, high strength and watertight characteristics, and a full range of light and heavy gauge COLORBOND colours are some of the advantages of this steel roofing material.
Woods Bagot and SAHMRI were the recipients of five coveted awards at the 2014 South Australian Architecture Awards including Public Architecture, Commercial Architecture and Steel Architecture, plus a commendation at the 2014 National Architecture Awards.
