SA has joined NSW, QLD, VIC and the ACT in adopting 7-star energy requirements for new homes set by the 2022 National Construction Code (NCC). WA is set to follow in May 2025.
The main ‘measuring tape’ used to rate the energy efficiency of Australian homes* is the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS), administered by the Australian Government’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
They have provided a simple fact sheet of their ‘Top tips for building for 7 stars’, outlining eight key decisions you can make to improve your home’s energy efficiency rating:
- Involving a NatHERS assessor early in the design process
- Repositioning orientation for optimal performance
- Improving window glazing, and considering placement and shading
- Increasing internal zones for heating and cooling with doors
- Insulating more depending on your climate
- Incorporating ceiling fans throughout
- Selecting appropriate external colours for your climate
- Carefully planning lighting placement, especially for greater continuous ceiling insulation
