The Governors Centre
The Governors Centre is a joint initiative between two historically significant and highly regarded public high schools – the pioneering Sydney Boys High, and its academically selective sister school, Sydney Girls High – both established in 1883, and both responsible for producing some of the country’s leading exponents of academia, sport and the arts.
Their collaborative arts centre features a sophisticated 400-seat performance auditorium alongside a 400sqm flat floor zone with moveable walls. In addition to performance and debating spaces, this flexibly designed room provides specialist music rehearsal and tuition rooms, classrooms, meeting rooms and examination facilities.
Specialist Designers
Backed by their record of accomplishment in public, residential, educational and heritage architecture delivery, Tanner Kibble Denton Architects (TKD) were chosen to head up the design team. Their brief, in conjunction with all the building construction considerations, included acoustic performance, durability and maintenance, and respect for the heritage elements of each school.
The Colour Purple
A distinguished shade, long associated with wisdom and courage, purple is also a colour used to inspire imagination and creativity, making it the ideal palette for an arts centre. The designers at TKD interspersed blue-purple and red-purple with neutral purple for the raked auditorium seats, creating a vibrant wave of colour throughout the theatre. Colour matching suitable flooring required a customised approach.
“The Governors Centre auditorium required a carpet colour that at large scale, allowed the colours of the auditorium chairs to feature. At a detailed scale, the carpet colour needed to extend a visual connectivity to the auditorium foyer finishes. Godfrey Hirst was receptive and was able to provide multiple carpet samples of differing custom dyes that responded to our design intent,” TKD Architects stated.
The result, courtesy of our Designer Jet capability, echoed the aesthetic brief with perfectly colour matched carpet sheets featuring a subtly heathered design finish.
Pitch Perfect Performance
Beyond creating a beautifully bespoke effect, Designer Jet carpet is rated ACCS contract heavy or extra heavy duty, which, along with excellent stain resistance, provided a robust, noise insulating surface to combat the demands of regular foot traffic. The choice of Enviro Bac Plus backing, along with Declare Red List Free certification ensuring stringent toxic free chemical standards, also met the need for healthier fixtures and fittings.
At the vanguard of tailored carpet design, Designer Jet uses precision engineering to inject dye directly into the carpet pile replicating almost any image, drawing, logo or pattern, in a near infinite spectrum of colours.
With the flexibility to create your own unique design, you can collaborate with the GH Commercial in-house team, or select from our vast library of production ready, fully customisable patterns, plus the choice of preferred surface texture, product size and backing type. Designer Jet provides distinctive custom carpet solutions for any commercial project.
