Longevity and low maintenance were the primary considerations when selecting the materials palette for the renovation of a home in Killara, NSW.
The renovation of Killara Cottage, a four-bedroom family home was a challenging project for designer Ann King Design. The brief called for durable materials to suit a home for older teenagers and entertaining, and the requirement to work with elements that could not be changed including a beautiful dark slate entrance.
Located in the enviable Sydney suburb of Killara, this home underwent a stunning renovation, transforming the dated and dreary interiors into durable and sophisticated charm.
The owners desired a home to suit their teenage children as well as their love of entertaining on a regular basis. This called for careful and considered material selection to ensure longevity and low maintenance. The brief also called for impactful spaces that would create "moments to be celebrated".
The original home featured a dark slate entrance that could not be changed; therefore, careful consideration was given to the flooring selection to ensure it would complement the beautiful dark slate.
Havwoods HW9554 Abrego timber flooring was selected for its rich, dark chocolatey tones and unparalleled durability.
The Abrego timber flooring delivered a beautiful base tone that complemented the slate entranceway perfectly and allowed for a dramatic colour palette from the use of contrasting colours in the joinery, upholstery and curtains.
"The Abrego colour worked well with the existing slate that we couldn't change and helped the flooring throughout to blend and create a harmonious base to work with. Because of its colour tone, durability and ability to work with the design, it was an easy choice for the owners," Ann King Design said.
To deliver on the promise of impactful "moments to be celebrated" spaces, custom brass inlay details were added to the Abrego timber flooring, along with stunning French doors to open onto the entertaining space, and feature lighting to further emphasise the sophisticated design details in the space.
