The ALP’s plan for affordable housing has been supported by the Housing Industry Association (HIA).
The plan released today commits a Labor Government to the development of a National Housing Strategy which would cover social housing, private rental housing and home ownership issues. A key element of the plan is the formation of a Housing Advisory Committee, which would be responsible for steering the development of the National Housing Strategy.
“HIA welcomes the opportunity for industry to be actively involved in exploring housing policy solutions and encouraging innovation in housing policy,” Ruth Morschel, HIA’s Executive Director, Public Affairs and Policy said.
The $252 million package over four years includes the maintenance and enhancement of the Commonwealth State Housing Agreement and the continuation of the First Home Owners Grant until 1 July 2002.
However, Ms Morschel was critical of the lack of detail on portfolio arrangements for housing. “HIA has called for the appointment of a Cabinet level Minister with responsibility for Housing, Infrastructure and Regional Growth. Good housing policy must encompass social, economic and environmental issues,” she said.
