Concrete grinding machines hired from Kennards Concrete Care are being used on a construction project that will enable Brisbane International Airport to accommodate Qantas’ new A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft.
Baulderstone is undertaking the year-long International Apron and Taxiway Extension (IATE) project at the Brisbane airport, involving a substantial expansion of the concrete surface. The work involves removing high spots of 5mm-45mm from a road base layer before covering it with 470mm thick concrete.
The cement stabilised road base was as hard as concrete, necessitating experimentation with different concrete grinders to determine the most effective machine for the job.
Kennards Concrete Care supplied a 10-inch petrol powered concrete planer for bulk removal as well as a heavy duty 240v concrete grinder with 30-grit cup discs for fine grinding on thicknesses of 2-4mm. Work was speeded up with a mini loader featuring a polyplaner that was capable of removing up to 10mm per pass.
Baulderstone was satisfied with the concrete grinders as well as the advice and service provided by the Kennards Concrete Care team in Brisbane.
Baulderstone also hired a trailer-mounted 4-inch pump from Kennards Hire Pump & Power and flex drive pumps from Kennards Hire Bowen Hills following heavy rain, in addition to the concrete grinders from Kennards Concrete Care.
Kennards Concrete Care operates equipment hire centres in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. The Sydney operations now include two hire centres at Artarmon and Moorebank.
