Kingspan Insulation provided a custom thermal solution for tiered seating at the new Optus Stadium in Perth, WA.
Designed by Hassell, Cox and HKS architects in a collaborative effort, the Optus Stadium (originally named Perth Stadium) was built as part of the regeneration program for the capital city’s infrastructure. The stunning facility has become the new home of AFL teams – the Fremantle Dockers and the West Coast Eagles, who have moved from the old Subiaco Oval, where the turnstiles turned for the last time in 2017.
Opened in January 2018, Optus Stadium is the third largest stadium in Australia, capable of seating up to 70,000 people. Though the stadium was initially planned for construction in Subiaco to replace the iconic Oval, the location was later moved to the eastern suburb of Burswood to allow for a build that was unconstrained by surrounding developments, integrated well with the expansion of Perth’s public transport system, and gave easier access to the CBD.
The new Optus Stadium will primarily host the AFL, but it will also provide an additional venue for a number of other sporting events and music concerts.
Featuring a round design, the stadium consists of tiered seating located above bars and restaurants in the levels below. The unique design called for a slim profile thermal solution capable of meeting the limited space allocation while still delivering on the high energy efficiency requirements of the project.
The Kingspan technical team, along with the project’s contractors at Cubic Group, designed a customised installation solution that could be applied to the underside of the seating plats. Kingspan’s insulation was used for soffit and ducting applications.
Kingspan products used in the project included Kooltherm K10 FM soffit boards, Kooltherm K10 White soffit boards and KoolDuct high performance rigid pre-insulated ductwork.
