Project overview
The City of Newcastle engaged Moddex to deliver a compliant balustrade solution for the shared public pedestrian and bicycle path on Allowah Street, Waratah West, NSW.
After inspecting the design and site, Moddex recommended configuration BS40 of their Bikesafe® Bikeway Barriers series, side-mounted to the exterior side of the existing retaining wall.
By opting for a side-mounted configuration of BS40 to the existing concrete foundations, the clearance width of the pathway was maximised, whilst matching the radius of the curved, sloped and rolled sections of the pathway.
As a standard full barrier with smooth deflection rail, the BS40 configuration offers sufficient safety and compliance with AU/NZ standards for public recreation projects.
Compared to a base-mounted configuration, the side-mounted configuration optimises the available surface area of the shared pathway barrier system, minimising protrusion of the bikeway handrail into the shared lane.
In just a few days, Moddex supplied and installed Bikesafe bikeway barriers – eliminating design and engineering costs, reducing installation costs, and avoiding the need for on-site welding and toxic fume safety procedures. The rapid installation also minimised community disruptions.
Why was Moddex selected?
Moddex responded quickly to City of Newcastle’s time restraints with a compliant shared pathway barrier that was highly adaptable, modular, and fast to supply and install.
The greatest motive to use Bikesafe bikeway barriers relates to the turnkey compliance gained with Moddex, ease of replaceability of the components, and modular flexibility of the system to follow curved and sloped sections.
Bikesafe bicycle barriers that assert compliance
Moddex Bikesafe bikeway barriers are a cohesive solution for streetscapes, public infrastructure, footpaths, bridges and roads.
Pre-engineered to fit existing concrete slabs, blockwork, steel, timber and other structures or foundations, Bikesafe is the modular shared pathway system that protects pedestrians and cyclists, especially those travelling at speed – mitigating the risk of injury or incidents of falls.
Quick to specify and easy to install, Bikesafe bikeway barriers meet the safety and compliance needs of public access areas, with curved sections to flow with cycleways.
