A hybrid intumescent coating system from Nullifire was specified for over 2,700 tonnes of structural steel used in the construction of the newly opened Southern Precinct at Melbourne Airport Terminal 4 and Pier G developments.
The project commenced in late 2013 with the airport remaining fully operational during the construction process; this meant all areas of construction were subject to a critical path analysis to ensure timely delivery.
The design of multiple structures included the use of a substantial quantity of structural steel; over 2,700 tonnes of steel used in the project required 120 minutes of fire protection with an intumescent coating system.
Nullifire SC902, a hybrid intumescent coating provided the solution to deliver the productivity outcomes required for this critical component of the project. The intumescent coating application was carried out offsite (65,000kg), and the coated steel delivered to the construction site as finished sections ready for erection to meet the time challenges of the construction program. Since bolted connections could be coated onsite at a later stage of construction, other trades were able to install their services without disruption or delay.
