A flagship project of the New South Wales government to support the tourism and fishing industries, the new Sydney Fish Market is being redeveloped as a world-class social and tourist destination in Blackwattle Bay, Pyrmont, two kilometres west of the CBD.
The third largest fish market in the world, the Sydney Fish Market is currently going through a massive redevelopment, with the 65,000-square-metre project designed by Danish firm 3XN in collaboration with local architectural firms BVN, GXN Innovation and landscape architect Aspect Studios to create a spectacular showcase for the seafood industry.
The design of the new Sydney Fish Market stands out for its distinctive roof, which floats above the structure connecting all the elements in a unique elegant movement that gives the building an iconic presence. It will take about 1,600m³ of spruce glulam, over 150 tons of steel and all the know-how of Rubner Holzbau to manufacture the large roof.
The massive roof is not only an integral part of the new Sydney Fish Market's iconic design, but also a standard bearer for its sustainability strategy. It is designed to collect rainwater as well as for the potential production of solar energy. Its unique shape uses the winds to extract warm air and protect workers from the southerly winds. The canopy, made of wood and aluminium, is designed to be as permeable as possible, minimising the need for air conditioning while diverting direct sunlight. The triangular openings allow plenty of natural daylight into the building, while their orientation shields the building from the sun during the hottest hours.
The Sydney Fish Market redevelopment is expected to be completed in 2024. Rubner Holzbau’s scope of work for the project includes structural engineering, fabrication and delivery to site.
