The 2024 Australian Good Design Awards have once again showcased the very best in design excellence, with over 1000 guests from the worlds of design, architecture, engineering, and business gathered at the International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney to celebrate the transformative impact of design.
This year’s theme, ‘The Design Effect’ emphasised the pivotal role that design plays in shaping products, services, spaces, and experiences, and driving the shift towards a more sustainable, low-carbon future. The event highlighted the ways in which great design can enhance functionality, aesthetics, and business success, while also contributing to societal progress.
Among the standout winners this year was Safetyline Jalousie, whose SJ Espacer louvre earned a coveted Good Design Award Winner Accolade in the Product Design category for its outstanding design and innovation. This marks the second Good Design Award for Safetyline Jalousie, following their first accolade for the SmartAir system in 2022.
The Jury praised the SJ Espacer louvre, commenting, “The SJ Espacer is a large-format, thermally broken louvre system that redefines interior ventilation. It promotes natural ventilation when open and enhances energy efficiency and weather protection when closed. The Jury congratulates the design team on a well-resolved and considered design that allows for a harmonious balance between aesthetics and low-emissions passive requirements in modern buildings.”
Leigh Rust, Director of Safetyline Jalousie, expressed his excitement about the recognition, stating, “The team is thrilled to receive this Good Design Award. SJ Espacer began as a response to client feedback for a large-format, Australian-made louvre, but evolved into much more. It addresses both operational carbon, by reducing energy consumption through natural ventilation, and embodied carbon, by using sustainable materials and efficient manufacturing. This innovation not only cuts energy costs but also supports sustainable building practices for a greener future. I look forward to seeing the positive impact this system will have on clients and their projects moving forward.”
