SAS International designed and manufactured a range of ceiling solutions for the Melbourne Airport T2 Arrivals Hall in Australia.

The hall area has been designed with the visitors’ experience in mind, the overall aesthetic reflecting the vibrant and modern city of Melbourne to give travellers a great first impression as to what they can expect on their visit.

SAS205 and SAS320 ceiling systems were installed with an added gloss to provide a pleasurable, bright and modern environment for passengers arriving from around the world. Acoustic control was a vital factor to ensure traveller comfort and ease, as well as highlighting the importance of creating a calm transport environment. Clarity was also a key element to guarantee public announcements were clear and could be easily understood throughout the airport.

SAS worked with architects Grimshaw to design the 1,100 square metres of suspended ceiling systems throughout the T2 Arrivals Hall area. The specification required a shadow gap between the long edges of each panel where lighting would be integrated while also incorporating essential services such as sensors, fire alarms and security cameras. The SAS205 system was most suited to this requirement, with hook-on access provided by the long edge metal tiles. A bespoke double-rolled J-bar was added into the system to allow for the dramatic gap between the tile modules.

The installation was seamless, despite some service co-ordination challenges due to the cranked nature of the soffit above the ceiling. SAS was able to effortlessly resolve the issue by designing the panels to suit the exact location requirements of the joints and cranked angle to ensure flawless installation. The technical team also provided continual advice throughout the project installation to address any deviations in layouts because of site changes.

With a local team, SAS International was able to quickly respond to any queries and adapt systems to suit the client’s vision, ensuring the most effective design and ease of install. With many grid components supplied from local stock, the installers were able to progress on the project before the manufactured items arrived.

The project was fully completed in Q1 2021.
