Newsweek has named Steelcase in their 2021 list of America’s ‘Most Responsible Companies’ for positive efforts in environmental stewardship, social impact and corporate governance. Steelcase had earlier received national recognition on Newsweek’s inaugural 2020 list.
“We’re delighted to be recognised for the work we’ve done and progress we continue to make through our environmental, social and governance efforts,” said Jim Keane, president and CEO of Steelcase. “We use our business as a force for good, and this designation reflects our commitment.”
Newsweek’s announcement comes at a crucial time for Steelcase with the company having achieved carbon neutrality for its own operations and setting ambitious carbon goals validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. These new targets position Steelcase as one of fewer than 200 organisations worldwide in line with a 1.5°C climate scenario by 2030.
To achieve this goal over the next decade, Steelcase plans to improve energy usage, reduce operations waste, align company behaviour and decisions with the strategy, and also partner with suppliers to set their targets.
America’s ‘Most Responsible Companies’
The list of America’s ‘Most Responsible Companies’ was created over a four-phase process, with global business data group Statista Inc. and Newsweek teaming up to identify 2,000 prominent companies headquartered in the United States. Each company in this shortlist was scored for their corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities as indicated by publicly available documents as well as key performance indicators. An independent survey of 7,500 U.S. citizens was used to finalise the 399 winners. Steelcase placed 151st overall and 14th in the category of ‘Consumer Goods’.
