Sunscreen Window Tinting offers custom signage solutions that meet and exceed BCA requirements for Braille and tactile signage applications. Designed in Australia, Braille and tactile signs are available from Sunscreen in different styles ranging from basic acrylic to high end stainless steel and custom finishes.
Clause D3.6 of the BCA requires Braille and tactile signs to be utilised in all buildings other than private residences for sanitary (toilet) facilities as well as to indicate accessibility to entrances and lifts.
According to BCA, toilet signs should be located on the wall (not the door) on the door knob side, with the line of Braille between 1250mm and 1350mm above floor level, and at least 50mm from the jamb. If this is not possible, it should be located on the hinge side or on the door.
Directional Braille and tactile signs should be located at the same height, directly ahead in the direction of travel.
Each signage plate consists of embossed tactile design, text and Braille lettering. The tactile components use standard imagery and fonts to ensure vision impaired non-Braille readers can decipher the sign. The standard Braille locator symbol is on the left hand side of the plate in line with Braille elements.
Braille and tactile signs should typically measure 190mm x 190mm. Sunscreen offers customised or architecturally designed signs if required with radius corners.
The five most common signs include Female, Male, Shower, Unisex Disabled Left Hand Transfer, and Unisex Disabled Right Hand Transfer. Sunscreen provides a complete supply-and-install service for their signage.
All signs provide relevant information as required by the Building Code of Australia (D3.6) and fulfil the requirements of Australian Standards (1428.1-2001).
