Tessellation, the art of creating patterns through the repetitive use of geometric shapes, has transcended its ancient origins to become a key element in modern design.

By blending mathematical precision with artistic creativity, modern tessellation offers a unique way to transform spaces, products, and visual experiences.

So why tessellation?

Tessellation creates visually captivating patterns that bring a sense of order and beauty to any surface, an aesthetic harmony with endless possibilities. The infinite combinations of shapes, colours, and patterns provide limitless design opportunities.

The broad application from architecture and interior design tessellation is adaptable to various industries and is considered highly versatile. Tessellation can be scaled up or down without losing its integrity, making it perfect for both large architectural projects and small product designs.

Applications in modern design

Tessellation applied to facades in architectural projects adds depth and texture to building exteriors, creating iconic and memorable structures. Intricate tessellated tiles enhance the aesthetic appeal of interiors, offering both beauty and functionality for flooring applications. In interior spaces, tessellation can be applied as partitions or screens to define spaces within open-plan areas.

Octagon and dot tessellation

Shown here is a stunning octagon and dot tessellation with a decorative encaustic tile positioned as the dot – this popular encaustic design is called ‘St Moritz’. Placing this decorative tile into the pattern design makes this tessellation a little more special. The pattern is framed by the border called ‘Deco’, an art deco design that works effortlessly with octagon and dot.

The colour palette selected has a modern take to tessellation; aqua, white, black and grey colours work perfectly together to transcend a contemporary colour palette. This design pattern can be easily applied to verandas, footpaths and exterior patios. Adding a marble step tread to this design gives it a more glamourous and elegant finish to your outdoor area.

This design can extend into your interiors by applying a checkered colour pattern to either bathroom or kitchen flooring with the same colour palette. Alternatively, you can apply porcelain mosaics in a monochrome design. Seen here are craquelle Victorian subway tiles that can be applied to walls with either white or sky blue colours to continue the colour decoration. For further detail, you can apply capping and listellos to the walls to frame or add an extra element of design.

Tessellation brings a sense of movement and energy to a space, captivating the eye and creating memorable environments. It has aesthetic versatility; whether your style is minimalist, bold, or somewhere in between, tessellations can be adapted to fit a wide range of design aesthetics.

Savoy

This mood board is inspired by tessellation ‘Savoy’, an entrancing design that has a star and cross repeat, set within a grid – seen here with a Richmond border framing the pattern design perfectly. The play of colours and shapes sets a unique pattern design – these colours are salmon, white, pink and off white. The colour coordination fits perfectly with the sandstone step tread, a perfect match. This tessellated pattern can be easily applied to the exterior of the home as a veranda or footpath application or set in a commercial setting.

The colour selection can be easily applied to the interior of a home by using the same colour palette. The same four colours can be implemented into a checkered tessellation, a perfect flooring application for a bathroom floor. Alternatively, a flower mosaic design can be applied as a flooring application with a red flower pattern to continue the warm colour palette. When designing kitchen splashbacks or bathroom wall applications, consider the crackle ‘craze’ subways, shown here in Victorian ivory colour. These craquelle Victorian subway tiles are highly durable and moisture resistant a perfect wall application. To add to this design style, shown here are capping and listellos to frame your walls. Adding chrome, gold or white fixtures to a bathroom or kitchen setting works great with this colour palette.

Our modern tessellation mood board is more than just a collection of patterns; it’s a source of inspiration and a tool for envisioning how geometric design can elevate your commercial and residential spaces.

Embrace the elegance and functionality of tessellation to create environments that are not only visually stunning but also uniquely yours.

Dorchester

This mood board was inspired by the beauty of squared shapes and the tessellation is called ‘Dorchester’, a simple yet elegant tessellated design made up of squares and the use of colour play. Seen here are black, off white, brown and white that create a squared design set in a grid-like formation. To frame the tessellated tiles, a Norwood border with an encaustic decorative tile is applied to the centre; this application creates an excellent finish to the pattern design. This pattern can easily be applied to exterior spaces, such as footpaths and verandas. To enhance the design in exterior spaces, Bowral bricks can be applied to footpaths to emphasise the path. Additionally, a bluestone step tread can be applied to stairs – a perfect application for this tessellated design.

Bringing the outside into interior spaces, porcelain mosaics can be applied to kitchen or bathroom floors. As this tessellated design has a brown monochrome design, black and white can be applied to the interior area. For instance, seen here are porcelain mosaics in squared pattern design ‘M05′ - this entrancing design is a great focal point for any flooring application whether in a kitchen or bathroom. For kitchen or bathroom walls, craquelle Victorian subway tiles can be applied as they are highly versatile and available in a wide range of decor colours. An alternative wall tile is the New York subway tile in your classic brick-shaped design with a contemporary feel. To enhance visual interest, capping tiles can be applied to border and frame your bathroom walls. Alternatively, encaustic decorative tiles can be applied to the skirting to continue the outdoor design indoors. To add to the design, black, chrome, gunmetal or white fixtures or fittings would fit perfectly into this mood board.

Modern tessellation is more than just a trend; it’s a powerful tool that combines art and mathematics to create, functional and sustainable designs. By integrating tessellations into your projects, you can enhance the aesthetic and structural qualities of your work, differentiate your brand and captivate your audience.
